Director-General’s Welcome Message
A message from Alastair Marke, Director-General of the Digital Technology Institute for Development (DTID).
The Blockchain & Climate Institute was founded in 2017 during COP23 in Bonn, at a time when blockchain, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies were beginning to reshape how institutions approached climate finance, governance, and international cooperation.
Since then, our work has grown beyond climate alone. We now support governments, international organisations, standards bodies, and public-sector partners on the responsible use of emerging digital technologies across development, governance, finance, infrastructure, and institutional capacity building.
For that reason, we are now becoming the Digital Technology Institute for Development (DTID). The new name reflects the broader scope of our work while preserving the expertise, partnerships, and institutional foundation built under BCI.
DTID remains committed to the same core principle: digital technologies must serve the public interest. Our role is to help ensure that artificial intelligence, blockchain, distributed ledger technologies, and digital infrastructure are applied responsibly, transparently, and in alignment with international standards.
Through research, standards development, technical cooperation, and capacity-building programmes across more than 70 countries, DTID supports institutions seeking to strengthen trust, improve governance, and translate digital innovation into practical implementation.
As you navigate these pages, I invite you to view DTID as a partner in building the digital frameworks, institutional capacity, and international standards needed for responsible development in the digital age.
